Self Care Isn’t Being Selfish

Why You Need To Self Nourish

Are you feeling a bit blah? Then let’s take a look at your love space in your heart chakra.

You’re a caregiver or service provider whose work day is focused on helping others get what they need. You’re patient, kind, compassionate, sorting out problems, sourcing supplies, offering support in many ways.

By the end of your shift or day you’re feeling drained and can’t be bothered to do things for yourself. You tell yourself tomorrow or days off or the weekend…

As time and lack of attention to yourself the self talk develops into the stories that lack kindness to yourself.

You may also be feeling lonely because you’ve put off spending time with friends. Past experiences of hurt may hold you back from forming closer connections.

So step one – give yourself some self love.

What does self-love mean to you?

For starters, it can mean:

Talking to and about yourself with kindness
Prioritising yourself
Taking a break from self-judgement
Trusting yourself
Being nicer to yourself
Forgiving yourself for times when you weren’t being nice to yourself

Ultimately self-love means accepting yourself as you are in this very moment for everything that you are. It means listening to your body and emotions to make the changes and decisions that are best for you.

Putting self love into practice is self care. Start by being kind, patient, gentle and compassionate to yourself, the way you would with someone else that you care about.

So how do you practice self care?

Become mindful of what you think, feel and want. Take actions based on what you need, this stops the automatic behaviour that kept you stuck in past experiences. Do “stuff” because you care about you, not because you think you should.

Self care means different things to each of us.

Nourish your physical wellbeing with massage, nature walks, swimming or skincare.

Do things that make you feel good like clearing your calender to make time for you, cleaning, delegating to others or going out.

Treat yourself to little gifts, comfy clothes, craft supplies.

Spend time alone to meditate, relax or do a hobby.

Always encourage yourself with positive self talk, journaling or affirmations.
